Career Education and Information

Understanding the world of work and the careers of the future is essential for preparing young people to pursue successful courses and careers. At Saint Mary’s College, we actively seek out every opportunity for our students to expand their knowledge and explore new careers and industries.

In recognition of our extensive careers support, St Mary’s College was honoured with the ‘Careers Inspiration Award 2019’. This award highlights the strong connections we have established with local employers, colleges and businesses leaders.

At Key Stage 3 Learning for Life & Work (LLW) gives students the opportunity to study ‘Employability’.

  • Pupils identify their strengths and skills, and they begin the process of career exploration and planning.  
  • They are supported as they develop their research skills and investigate enterprise and entrepreneurship.  
  • Student research jobs and identify the skills required for each career. They learn about employment trends and types of jobs in the local area and the global job market.
  • In Year 10 pupils will have one dedicated careers lesson to assist them in making choices for their GCSEs.  They investigate learning styles and match their style to a range of jobs and subjects.

 

Past Pupils of Saint Mary’s College continue to excel in pursuing careers across various industries. A key factor in enabling our young people to fulfil their potential and achieve their ambitions is our strong partnership with local universities. In Key Stage 4 & 5 pupils have the opportunity to visit and participate in university outreach programs, including the Queen’s University Pathways Opportunity Programme. Sixth form students regularly attend talks from speakers on topics such as courses, colleges, finance, and apprenticeships. In careers education pupils are guided through the range of opportunities available in their chosen career paths. They apply to universities, higher education colleges, further education colleges, and apprenticeships. Throughout the application process, students receive comprehensive advice and support.

Work Experience Opportunities for Key Stage 4 and 5 Students

Key Stage 4 and 5 students who have an interest in a specific career area are invited to self-refer for work experience. To make a request, please contact Mrs. Rogan or your careers teacher. We will endeavour to accommodate these requests where possible.

Additionally, online and virtual work experience opportunities are regularly communicated to students. A wide range of opportunities is available through Speakers for Schools.
